History of Star Wars

1977 was a very innovative year for cinema as it saw the release of Star Wars one of the most spectacular yet mysterious movies to come out since the first films graced the silver screen. The blend of fantastical science fiction and vague mysticism made the movie goers of the 70s hungry for more and the pop culture phenomenon of Star Wars quickly began to grow.

Three years later in 1980 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was released and became the highest grossing movie of the year and introduced fans to a more darker and serious tone, going into much more depth regarding the powerful and mysterious Force, exploring and developing the existing characters and introducing many new unforgettable characters and scenes that are still parodied and referenced today.

And so we come to 1983 and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi was released, grossing a whopping $572 million at the box office. Despite the financial success Return of the Jedi was not such a large hit with fans who found the movie to be very confused with it's tone, characters and plot overall.

Thirteen years later George Lucas began his prequel trilogy starting with Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The movie grossed millions at the box office but ultimately disappointed fans with it's lacklustre plot and over dependence on CGI over the previously masterfully executed practical effects seen in the original trilogy. Another two movies followed Episode I; Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. All three movies received mixed acclaim from fans and critics alike.
